At OLI DE SANTANYÍ, we use sustainable methods to keep our olive trees healthy—without any chemicals. One of our most proven methods comes from Mallorca's agricultural tradition: using sheep's wool as natural protection for the trunk.
Sheep's wool contains lanolin and other natural fats that are unpleasant for many insects and pests. When wrapped around the trunk, the wool acts as a barrier: ants, caterpillars, and other pests that like to attack young shoots or leaves are reliably kept away—without the use of pesticides.
The wool comes from Mallorcan sheep, which are sheared regularly anyway. Instead of disposing of this valuable resource, we put it to good use. In doing so, we are making a double contribution to sustainability:
- Protection of olive trees using a natural method
- Support for local agriculture
The sheep's wool remains on the trunk, where it acts as a permanent natural protective layer. Over time , rain, sun, and wind cause small fibers to detach and fall to the ground around the tree. There they slowly decompose and release valuable nutrients. In this way, the wool not only protects the tree but also improves the soil quality.
At OLI DE SANTANYÍ, we are convinced that quality can only be achieved in harmony with nature. The combination of traditional methods, such as sheep's wool, and modern technology makes our organic olive oil unique—honest, sustainable, and full of character.
The sheep's wool around our olive trees is more than just protection: it represents our philosophy. Sustainable, regional, and close to nature—this is how the olives that produce our award-winning organic olive oil grow.
